Visitors to the Jade Buddha Temple will find a wonderful example of Chinese architecture in the three main halls that are connected by two courts. The temple was built from 1918 to 1928, to replace the original temple that was built in 1882 to house two jade Buddhas that were transported to Shanghai from Burma by abbot Hui Gen of Mount Putuo. The temple also houses a third Buddha that was a gift from Singapore. The largest of the original Buddha statues is 1.95 meters tall and weighs three ones. The statue from Singapore is much larger than the two original statues. Visitors can see all three jade Buddhas in the Jade Buddha Chamber inside the Grand Hall of Magnificence.
The Jade Buddha Temple is still the home to an active monk community and visitors will be fascinated by their religious ceremonies that are sometimes open to the public. The costs to visit the temple is three United States dollars, and seeing the Buddhas requires visitors to pay another dollar and a half. Visitors should be aware that they can not take photos of the Buddhas.Visitors are also encouraged to leave a donation in the charity box. Visitors can purchase jade at the temple, but it is available at cheaper prices other places in Singapore.
